Once you have decided to have surgery, you will be given a suitable date and your admission will be arranged. You will usually be admitted on the day of surgery and will be discharged from hospital once you are fit enough to look after yourself. For most operations this will mean a stay in hospital for a day or two. Occasionally, people undergoing a tummy tuck surgery will need to stay longer. This is because drains are placed into the tissues after these operations.

Once the drains dry up, you can go home. Most often, drains will stay in place for 24-48 hours, however, on occasion they do not dry up within 48 hours, particularly after an abdominoplasty. Sometimes we let people go home with their drains in place and daily dressing appointments are arranged until the drains are out if there is persistent drainage.

The Centre for Cosmetic Surgery offers a modern and patient-friendly approach to anaesthesia for its aesthetic surgery patients: TIVA - Total Intravenous Anaesthesia. TIVA, a newer anaesthetic technique very well suited to small to medium sized operations, has become possible since the advent of a new generation of intravenous medications with unique properties. These remarkable medications, when administered by a qualified anaesthetist in a properly monitored setting, provide comfortable sleep without many of the unpleasant side effects of a full, traditional general anaesthetic. Unlike most general anaesthetics, there is minimal decrease of the breathing rate and blood pressure so patients breathe calmly and slowly on their own. No breathing tubes or ventilators are required. TIVA patients sleep soundly during the entire operation, feeling no pain and experiencing no anxiousness. They wake quickly and comfortably with no memory of their procedure. The technique is used commonly in the United States for most outpatient cosmetic surgery procedures with an extremely high degree of patient safety and patient acceptance.

After discharge from hospital, we will ask you to return for dressing checks and a follow up appointment with the plastic surgeon a few weeks after the surgery.
